A 3-day group Masai Mara safari from Nairobi lists from $183 per person, and the reserve fee of $100 to $200 a day is usually extra. The Mara Conservancy fee table sets $100 per non-resident adult per day from 1 January to 30 June and $200 from 1 July to 31 December. Children 9 to 17 pay $50 and children under 9 enter free. The fee doubles for the second half of the year, which is also the season the Great Migration herds are in the reserve.

Which Masai Mara Safari to Book

If You have one day only

Book the Maasai Mara Day Trip with Maasai Village at $190 or the Maasai Mara Day Tour from Nairobi by Land Cruiser at $225. Both are long days and the reserve fee is extra.

If You want a first safari on a budget

Take the 3-Day Group Joining Safari with a Land Cruiser at $183 or the pick, the 3-Day Maasai Mara Group Safari in a 4WD Jeep at $199. Both sell an option with the park fees included, which is the safer choice.

If You want lodge comfort in the Mara

The 3-Day Small Group Safari at Jambo Mara Lodge at $570 sleeps you at a lodge on full board. Park fees are excluded and collected in cash on the departure day.

If You want Lake Nakuru too

The 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Group Safari at $333 keeps costs down, while the 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Lodge Safari at $1,300 has every park fee in the price.

If You want Amboseli and Kilimanjaro views too

The 6-Day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli Safari at $580 runs 6 days, and the 6-Day Small Group Safari to Mara, Nakuru and Amboseli at $750 adds a small group of 7 in a jeep. Park entry is paid at the gates on both.

If You want a balloon flight

The Maasai Mara Hot Air Balloon Safari and Champagne Breakfast at $495 carries you for 1h 10m over the reserve with a champagne breakfast after landing. You must already be staying in the Mara, since pickup is from lodges and camps there.

Masai Mara Safari in Six Decisions

Every Masai Mara trip comes down to six choices, and each card below settles one of them with the key figure.

  • Which tour

A 3-day group joining safari from Nairobi is the first-safari pick, listing from $183 per person. If you want one price with no surprises, the lodge safari at $1,300 is the only listing with park fees included. One day only? Day trips run from $190.

3 DAYS: FROM $183 PER PERSON

  • When to go

June to September falls between the long and short rains, and the Mara Conservancy describes migration herds reaching the Mara Triangle around June. The trade-off is the reserve fee, which doubles from $100 to $200 per adult a day from 1 July. January to June keeps the low fee.

JUNE TO SEPTEMBER: BETWEEN THE RAINS

  • How many days

Three days and two nights is the shortest trip with a full day of game drives. A day trip from Nairobi runs 12 or 13 hours. Four or 6 days add Lake Nakuru and Amboseli.

3 DAYS: SHORTEST WITH A FULL DAY

  • Fly or drive

Most safaris collect you from a Nairobi hotel between 7:00 and 8:30 and travel by 4x4 Land Cruiser. The other way is a scheduled light-aircraft flight, with six airlines flying daily to Mara airstrips. Balloon flights pick up from camps inside the reserve.

6 AIRLINES FLY DAILY TO THE MARA

  • What it costs

Prices on this site run from $183 per person for a 3-day group safari to $1,300 for a 4-day lodge safari. The reserve fee is usually extra at $100 per adult a day until 30 June and $200 from 1 July. The 12-hour ticket does not carry overnight.

    $183 TO $1,300 PER PERSON

  • Pack and combine

Pack layers in khaki, beige and green for cool dawn drives, and one soft-sided bag, which some listings cap at 15 kg. Add a balloon flight at $495 or $593 if you are staying a night in the Mara. Longer trips pair the Mara with Lake Nakuru or Amboseli.

SOFT BAG: 15 KG ON SOME LISTINGS

The Great Migration on a Masai Mara Safari

The Mara Conservancy describes the migration herds reaching the Mara Triangle by the Sand River around June and moving on to the Mara River within days.

How Big the Herds Are

The Mara Conservancy puts the numbers on the move at 1,245,000 wildebeest, 200,000 Burchell's zebra, 18,000 eland and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle. Those figures explain why the migration dominates any Masai Mara safari in the second half of the year. The Mara Triangle is bounded by the Mara River and the Tanzania border, with no fences.

  • 1,245,000 wildebeest
  • 200,000 Burchell's zebra
  • 18,000 eland
  • 500,000 Thomson's gazelle

Which Safaris Go to the River

These safaris name the Mara River or the migration in their itineraries. Budget 3-day options include the 3-Day Maasai Mara Group Safari in a 4WD Jeep, the 3-Day Group Joining Safari with a Land Cruiser and the 3-Day Maasai Mara Safari with Private Tents. The two-day choice is the Overnight Maasai Mara Safari from Nairobi.

Longer trips are the 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Group Safari, the 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Lodge Safari and the 6-Day Small Group Safari to Mara, Nakuru and Amboseli. Note that July to December is also the $200 fee season, so a migration safari costs more in reserve fees than the same trip in spring.

Big Cats and the Big Five

The listings aim for the Big Five across their game drives. The 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Lodge Safari adds Lake Nakuru, where the itinerary names flamingos and White Rhinos alongside Mara River game drives. The Overnight Maasai Mara Safari from Nairobi describes game drives over 2 days searching for big cats and herds.

The 6-Day Small Group Safari to Mara, Nakuru and Amboseli gives a full day in the Mara on day 2 and a full day in Amboseli on day 5. Treat every sighting as what the safari aims for, never a guarantee. Animals move, and a good driver-guide works the day around the latest movements.

Where to Stay for a Masai Mara Safari

Most safaris here pick you up from a Nairobi hotel in the CBD or Westlands and include the camp or lodge in the Mara. Book your own room for the night before pickup, or a Mara camp if you add a balloon flight, which collects guests inside the reserve.

Links open a hotel search for that area on Booking.com through Stay22. Prices and availability are shown there.

How Much a Masai Mara Safari Costs

Listings on this page run from $183 to $1,300 per person, and most carry the reserve fee on top. The fee table below is what you pay per day inside the reserve, separate from the safari price.

The Reserve Fee by Season

The Mara Conservancy fee table for the Mara Triangle lists these conservation fees, and the safari listings quote the same figures for the reserve. The fee depends on who you are and on the season, because the second half of the year is high season and migration season. A 3-day safari with 2 nights in the reserve carries the per-day fee for each day inside.

One more rule matters at the gate. The ticket is a 12-hour ticket, valid 6:00 am to 6:00 pm whatever time you enter, and it does not carry overnight. The Mara Triangle takes no cash, only M-Pesa or card.

Which Safaris Include the Fee

Almost every listing here sells the safari without the reserve fee and adds it as a separate cost or an option. Only the 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Lodge Safari at $1,300 has all park entrance fees inside the listed price. The table shows the reserve fee status for every safari of one day or longer, so you can see what the listed price actually covers before you book.

Other Costs on the Day

The safari price and the reserve fee are not the whole budget. A Maasai village visit costs about $20 per person where a listing offers it as an extra. Balloon flights list at $495 for the champagne breakfast flight and $593 for the bush breakfast flight.

Longer safaris add the Kenya Wildlife Service fee of $90 per non-resident adult per day at Lake Nakuru and Amboseli. Most listings exclude tips from the price. Kenya also requires foreign travellers to hold an eTA before arrival, which starts at $30 for normal processing.

Sources: Mara Triangle, Kenya Wildlife Service, eTA Kenya.

How to Get to the Masai Mara

Most safaris on this site drive from Nairobi with hotel pickup included. The alternative is a scheduled flight to a Mara airstrip. Kenya sits in East Africa, and the Serengeti across the border is in Tanzania.

By Road with a Safari

The drive from Nairobi crosses the Great Rift Valley, and several listings stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for photos before continuing through Narok toward the reserve. Pickup areas on these safaris are the Nairobi CBD and Westlands, free of charge on many listings, with the City Market as a meeting point where hotel pickup does not reach. The standard vehicle is a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for game viewing and photography.

By Air

Flying is the other way in. The Mara Conservancy lists Air Kenya, Safarilink, Fly540, Mombasa Air Services, Aeronav and Boskovic Air Charters as airlines with daily scheduled flights to Mara airstrips. Landing fees at the airstrips can be paid at the KAPS office in Nairobi or at the Serena airstrip.

Balloon flights such as the Maasai Mara Hot Air Balloon Safari and Champagne Breakfast collect guests from their lodge or camp inside the reserve.

Entering Kenya

Foreign travellers need a Kenya eTA before arriving. It starts at $30 for normal processing and applications are generally processed within three business days, about 72 hours. Every traveller in a group needs their own.

Apply only at etakenya.go.ke or through the official mobile app. The application asks for a passport valid at least 6 months with one blank page, a photo, your itinerary and accommodation confirmation. Show the approved eTA at every departure and arrival point.

How Many Days on a Masai Mara Safari

Most safaris on this page run 3 days. That gives two nights at the reserve, a sunset drive on arrival day and one full day on the plains, with a picnic lunch on several listings.

Day Trip, 2 Days or 3 Days

A day trip from Nairobi is possible but tight. The longest runs 13 hours with hotel pickup at 4:30 AM (Maasai Mara Day Trip with Maasai Village), and it buys one day of game drives and one reserve fee. Two days add an overnight and an evening drive.

Three days give a full day in the reserve. Longer trips add Lake Nakuru or Amboseli, and each extra park adds the Kenya Wildlife Service fee of $90 per non-resident adult per day. The table below compares the listings, with prices from the tour cards and fee days from each listing's own terms.

Camp or Lodge

Budget tented camps dominate the cheaper listings. Rhino Tourist Camp is named on the pick, with big self-contained tents that have a bed, shower, toilet, mosquito nets, hot water and evening electricity. The Overnight Maasai Mara Safari from Nairobi uses Rhino, Lenchada or Enchoro camps. At the other end, the 3-Day Small Group Safari at Jambo Mara Lodge costs $570 per person and puts you two nights at Jambo Mara Lodge on full board, with shared game drives in a customized 4x4.

Same park, same animals, very different bedding.

The Vehicle

Most listings use a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, which is what you want for photography and standing game viewing. The pick runs small groups of 7 to 8 people in its Land Cruiser. The 3-Day Group Joining Safari with a Land Cruiser lists a maximum group of 60, so ask how many share your jeep.

The one exception is the Overnight Maasai Mara Safari from Nairobi, whose group option uses a van with a pop-up roof.

How to Pay the Masai Mara Reserve Fee

On most safaris here the driver-guide handles the gate, but the money is yours, and the way it is collected matters. The Mara Conservancy, which runs the Mara Triangle on the western side of the reserve, publishes the clearest rules.

Cash, Card or M-Pesa

The Mara Triangle takes no cash for park fees. It accepts M-Pesa and credit card only. Tickets are sold through KAPS, either online with a VISA card in Nairobi or on arrival from a KAPS employee at Purungat Bridge, Oloololo Gate or the Serena airstrip.

Listings on the Narok side differ. The 3-Day Small Group Safari at Jambo Mara Lodge collects the park fees in cash on the departure day, while the 3-Day Maasai Mara Budget Camping Safari takes cash or card, with a surcharge on card payments. Ask your operator how your fee will be paid before you travel, and carry the right means of payment.

Where You Stay Decides Where You Pay

The Mara Conservancy charges fees by where you sleep. If you stay in the Mara Triangle and drive in through Sekenani Gate on the eastern side, you pay only when you reach Purungat Bridge on the Mara River. Children aged 0 to 8 enter free, non-resident children aged 9 to 17 pay $50 a day, and adults pay $100 a day from 1 January to 30 June and $200 from 1 July to 31 December.

Resident and citizen rates need proof. Visitors must show a passport, a national ID or a birth certificate to get a resident or citizen rate, otherwise they pay the non-resident rate.

Vehicle Fees and the 12-Hour Ticket

The vehicle pays too, and that cost sits with the operator on every safari here. The Mara Triangle charges Ksh 1,000 a day for a vehicle under 6 seats, Ksh 1,500 for 6 to 12 seats and Ksh 3,500 for 13 to 24 seats. Vehicle fees are valid for 12 hours with unlimited exits and re-entries, and a vehicle passing through to another destination has two hours of transit before fees apply.

Your own ticket follows the same clock. It runs from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm whatever time you enter, and it does not carry overnight, so a safari with two nights in the reserve needs a ticket for each day inside.

The Honest Small Print

Every Masai Mara safari has limits. Here they are before you pay.

  • Most listings leave the reserve fee out of the price: $100 per non-resident adult per day from January to June and $200 from July to December, per the Mara Conservancy fee table. Only the 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Lodge Safari includes every park fee.
  • On the 3-Day Small Group Safari at Jambo Mara Lodge the park fees are collected in cash on the departure day.
  • The Mara Triangle takes no cash at its gates: M-Pesa or card only.
  • A Maasai village visit is an extra on most listings, about $20 per person where the listing names a price.
  • Balloon flights collect guests from camps and lodges inside the reserve, so you need a night in the Mara.
  • Lake Nakuru and Amboseli add the Kenya Wildlife Service fee of $90 per non-resident adult per day.

What an experience. Floating over the Masai Mara watching the sun rise. Didn't see too many animals but that really didn't spoil the experience. Loved every minute.

Dos and Don'ts for a Masai Mara Safari

Do

  • Do read the park fee line on your listing before you pay, because most safari prices leave the reserve fee out and the pick sells fees as a separate option.
  • Do carry a card or M-Pesa for the gates, because the Mara Triangle takes no cash at all.
  • Do apply for the Kenya eTA ahead of travel, because processing generally takes three business days and every traveler in a group needs one.
  • Do book your safari between January and June when the fee is $100 per adult per day instead of $200, because the fee doubles in the second half of the year.

Don't

  • Don't assume a day trip puts you at the migration river crossings, because the 12-hour day tour and the 13-hour day trip name no Mara River stop in their itineraries.
  • Don't bring cash for the gates in the Mara Triangle, because only M-Pesa and card are accepted there.
  • Don't book a balloon flight unless you sleep inside the Mara, because both balloon listings collect guests from lodges and camps in the reserve.
  • Don't skip the yellow fever and malaria advice, because the reserve sits in a malaria zone and the CDC recommends medicine for most of Kenya.

Everything Else Worth Knowing

Best Time for a Masai Mara Safari

The best time depends on your budget. January to June halves the reserve fee to $100 per adult per day, while July to December brings the migration and the $200 fee. Kenya has two rainy seasons, the long rains and the short rains.

Month by Month

This table lines up the seasons, the rain pattern from the Kenya Meteorological Department, and the Mara Conservancy fee table that the tour listings also quote. Use it to weigh migration season against a cheaper entry fee. The fee figure is per non-resident adult per day.

MonthsRainReserve fee per adultWhat it means
January to FebruaryOutside the rainy seasons$100Low fee, between the two rainy seasons
March to MayLong rains (Kenya Met)$100Green season, fee stays at the low rate
JuneHerds arriving by the Sand River (Mara Conservancy)$100Migration starts at the last low-fee month
July to SeptemberOutside the rainy seasons$200Migration on the Mara River, highest fees
October to DecemberShort rains (Kenya Met)$200Short rains and the $200 fee continue

Cheaper Months

Travel from January to June and the reserve fee drops to $100 per adult per day, half the July to December rate. Children aged 9 to 17 pay $50 in both seasons and under 9s enter free. On a 3-day safari that difference repeats every day inside the reserve.

A 3-Day Maasai Mara Safari with Private Tents, for example, excludes $200 per person for the safari January to June and $400 July to December, so the calendar alone changes the real cost.

Safety and Rules on a Masai Mara Safari

A guided Masai Mara safari is a safe way to see big animals. You travel with a licensed driver-guide, and the reserve rules keep vehicles and wildlife apart.

Rules in the Mara Triangle

The Mara Conservancy sets the rules for the Mara Triangle. Speed is 50 km/h on graded roads and 30 km/h elsewhere. Off-road driving is banned in High-Use Zones.

In Low-Use Zones you may not approach cats closer than 25 metres. At a busy sighting, when more than five vehicles wait, viewing is capped at 10 minutes and waiting vehicles hold 100 metres back. Your guide knows these rules, which is one more reason to book a guided safari rather than rent a car.

Health Before You Go

The CDC recommends prescription malaria medicine for most areas of Kenya, the Masai Mara included. It lists none for central Nairobi, where your trip starts and ends. Yellow fever vaccine is recommended for travelers from 9 months of age, though generally not for trips limited to Nairobi itself, and Kenya requires it from age 1 for arrivals from a country with yellow fever risk.

Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are recommended for most travelers. Talk to a travel clinic well before your departure date.
